Many young people seem to be burnt out by school. They are lacking in energy and seem to have lost their zest for life. Some of them may be completely not attending school or attending but be hardly functioning.
Parents are often told that they must put more pressure on their children or that they aren't being strict enough. They're told to use 'tough love' but when they try, things get even worse.
What's going on? Why are young people reacting in this way - and what can we do to help?
In this webinar, Dr Naomi Fisher, clinical psychologist, will explain how burn out happens and why autistic young people may be particularly susceptible to school-related distress and burn out. She'll describe how recovery happens and give parents some ideas to help their children get back on the road to recovery - on their own terms.
This webinar is not therapy or clinical advice and is not intended as a replacement for therapy.

F eedback from this webinar:
I've watched the 'Burnt out by school?' talk and have to say that I was riveted. It honestly felt like you'd been present for the past six years of our family life. During that time I have researched and read and watched and studied pretty much every resource I can find on school attendance difficulties, autism in girls and co-morbid mental health problems. Your webinar somehow pulled all of that together, validating our experience and confirming that what we've done – given her a chance to withdraw and be in a low demand environment whilst she recovers – has been the right thing. It's taken a long time, but it's working.
Since watching a webinar by @naomicfisher we have more understanding of how to approach Miss 15's school refusal (burnout) and she is now making progress stepping back out into the world, slowly but surely. Such a huge relief thanks to some expert advice and insights.
Amazing. I can’t tell you the sheer relief and gratitude parents feel to have professionals recognise what they’ve been saying for years!
